JHERRUK COAL FIELD
Pakistan Petroleum
Limited (PPL) and British Oil Company (BOP) drilled few drill holes
for exploration of oil and gas, which indicates coal in the logs.
Then, Geological Survey of Pakistan during May 1981 carried out
drilling programme to ensure the availability of coal resources
where the first bore hole was drilled near Daduri Ridge, on the
right band of River Indus. Eleven lignitic beds of variable
thickness were encountered within the depth of 144.70 meters.
Maximum thickness of 1.32 meters of coal was recorded in this bore
hole at the depth of 118.20 meters. In 1981 and between 1985-89, the
Geological Survey of Pakistan in cooperation with the United States
Geological Survey for International Development drilled 80 drill
holes in Sonda-Thatta, Ongar, Jherruk and Indus East Blocks, where
the total coal resources calculated as 7.6 Billion tons.
